Operating a Vehicle while Impaired (OVI), also known as Driving Under the Influence (DUI), is a serious offense in Ohio. The stiff penalties for impaired drivers are harsher than ever, including license suspension, possible jail time and hefty fines.
Since 2019, the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) has issued more than 90,000 OVI arrests in all of Ohio. Historically, there have been more police stops in Franklin, Hamilton, Cuyahoga, Stark and Montgomery Counties. This staggering number continues to rise.
Routes with the most OVI arrests
Four highways in Ohio have become hotspots for law enforcement between June 2023 and this year. These are:
- Interstate 75: I-75, which runs from Cincinnati to Toledo through Dayton, has the most arrests with 739.
- Interstate 71: Serving all three of Ohio’s largest population centers, I-71 has 534 OVI arrests already.
- Interstate 70: This highway that provides access between Indiana and West Virginia ranks third with 436 arrests.
- US 23: A major north-south state highway, 332 arrests have been recorded here.
Given the strict traffic laws, enforcers are often more vigilant on certain highways. If you regularly drive in Ohio or plan to, knowing these roads with the highest OVI arrest rates can help you ensure a safer journey.
In case of an arrest
Sober drivers do not worry about getting pulled over. Still, if an officer asks you to pull over due to suspected OVI, cooperate with the authorities and politely request to speak with an experienced attorney for more guidance on the situation.
